How To Treat "Maskne"

Updated: Jan 5, 2022

Keys? Check. Phone? Check. Wallet? Face mask? Double check.

Wearing a mask when we leave the house has become a normal part of our everyday routine. Protecting ourselves and those around us is critical, and we don’t know about you, but we’re stocking up on cute styles for every day of the week. As important as it is to wear a mask, an unwanted side effect many people are experiencing has become known as “maskne.”

Maskne can be caused by a couple of things happening at once: the fabric is causing friction against the skin (which can lead to irritation and inflammation, and eventually, acne), AND we’re keeping sweat, dirt and oil under a moist environment, thanks to our breath and the fabric trapping it close against our skin.

Forbes, InStyle, Yahoo and HuffPost have all featured Glo Skin Beauty products in articles about treating maskne. Check out our own tips and solutions below!

Wash your face before and after wearing a mask

Cleansing your face twice a day is one of the best ways to prevent maskne. Starting your day with clean skin under your mask means there’s less residual sweat or dirt that ends up sitting there trapped underneath the fabric. Cleansing after you remove it for the day helps remove built-up bacteria, perspiration and dirt that may have collected during the day.

Gentle Cream Cleanser is a calming, SLS/SLES-free cleanser that soothes while it cleanses with a milky, refreshing formula.

Putting an occlusive (which works as a physical barrier) between your skin and your mask can help protect against any chafing and also prevent the spread of bacteria across your face.

Barrier Balm hydrates and soothes with vitamin E and rosehip seed oil while it protects: apply to areas of the face where your mask meets your skin (like the nose, cheeks and chin).

Detox and deep clean with exfoliation

After wearing a mask day after day, irritation can lead to clogged follicles. Charcoal Detox Mask can help draw out impurities from the skin with kaolin and bentonite clays, and is gentle enough that it won’t further irritate your skin.

Pro 5 Liquid Exfoliant is an extremely gentle poly and alpha hydroxy-based liquid exfoliant that helps reveal clearer, brighter skin, crucial for congestion or breakouts that might be building up as a result of wearing a mask.

Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize!

Irritated, inflamed skin not only needs moisture in order to heal, but needs to be soothed as well.

Balancing Moisture Remedy is a fragrance-free moisturizer that calms and hydrates skin, helping to restore damaged moisture barriers that can sometimes occur as a result of wearing a face mask.

Protect sensitive skin Even though part of your face will be covered by the nature of wearing a mask, that doesn’t mean you should skip the sunscreen. Solar Shade SPF 50 is formulated for sensitive skin, so it’s the perfect solution to double up on your protection without risking any irritation if your face is in a delicate state. Maskne may be the new acne, but at Glo Skin Beauty we offer solutions to help combat this issue. Remember: stay safe, wear a mask and keep up with your skincare routine with the products featured above! By Glo Editor
