Red light therapy (RLT) is a type of photomedicine, a wellness approach that utilizes light of different wavelengths to treat various health conditions. Red light exists in the wavelengths according to the National Center for Atmospheric Research. Certain wavelengths of light trigger changes in cells that affect how they function for the better, according to the American Society for Laser Medicine & Surgery.

Red light therapy is considered a complementary therapy, meaning it’s meant to be used alongside conventional healthcare and MD-approved treatments. For example, if you have fine lines and wrinkles, you may use red light therapy with dermatologist-directed topicals, such as retinoids, or in-office treatments, such as injectables or lasers. If you have a sports injury, a physical therapist may treat you with red light therapy as well.

Here are a few of the possible health benefits red light therapy may bring to your overall healthcare routine.

1. May Address Skin and Hair Concerns, From Acne to Wrinkles

One of the most popular uses of red light therapy is for skin conditions. These are some of the conditions red light may treat.

Lines and wrinkles Red light therapy can be used in the treatment and prevention of lines and wrinkles, says Jared Jagdeo, MD, the founding director of the Center for Photomedicine at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University in Brooklyn, New York. Some research shows that red light may stimulate collagen to smooth out lines and wrinkles. Note: You may see best results for moderate lines rather than those already deeply etched in. At that point, says Dr. Jagdeo, you’ll likely need additional treatments in combination with red light (such as skin resurfacing treatments).
Acne Breakouts don’t automatically go away with age — there are many people who deal with acne along with lines and wrinkles. And you may be able to address both in one treatment. In a small randomized controlled clinical study published in January 2022 in Photodermatology, Photoimmunology & Photomedicine, red light therapy decreased lesions by 36 percent for people with mild or moderate acne. Red light may help decrease inflammation and may help kill bacteria, both known causes behind the formation of acne, says Jagdeo.
Redness It seems counterintuitive that red light would counter redness, but one of its primary functions is to decrease inflammation. Less inflammation in the skin can ease redness, says Jagdeo. Unfortunately, there hasn't been enough research to show that red light is effective in treating skin conditions such as psoriasis, according to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health.
Hair growth Red light may be another treatment for hair loss, notes Jagdeo. “Red light helps decrease inflammation and promote more blood flow to the scalp and hair, allowing follicles to get more oxygen and nutrients,” he explains. One literature review published in July 2020 in Skin Appendage Disorders of 10 controlled studies on low-level laser therapy (LLLT), which employs light on the red and near-infrared spectrum, concluded that this treatment may have increased hair thickness and density compared with controls and were very safe, with minor side effects, such as scalp itching.

2. May Lessen Pain

Research is still emerging on red light’s ability to decrease pain in various chronic conditions. “If you use the right dose and protocol, you can use red light to reduce pain and inflammation,” says Praveen Arany, PhD, an associate professor at the University of Buffalo and the interim director of the Center of Excellence for Photobiomodulation at Shepherd University in Shepherdstown, West Virginia.

How so? “There’s a specific protein on the surface of the neuron that when it absorbs light, it reduces the ability of the cell to conduct or perceive pain,” Dr. Arany explains. Past research shows that LLLT may be useful to control pain for those who have neuropathy (nerve pain, which is commonly caused by diabetes, according to the Cleveland Clinic).

3. May Help With Sports Performance and Injury Recovery

Red light may stimulate your mitochondria (the energy powerhouse of cells), triggering an enzyme that drives up ATP (the “energy currency” of the cell according to StatPearls), which — in the end — benefits muscle growth and repair, according to research published in April 2020 in Frontiers in Sports and Active Living. Because of that, photobiomodulation treatment (PBM) with red or near-infrared lights before exercise may enhance muscle performance, heal muscle injury, and reduce post-workout pain and soreness, notes research published in AIMS Biophysics in 2017.

Again, these conclusions aren't well-established.

4. May Help Brain Health

One emerging possible benefit of red light therapy is in brain health.

“There are striking studies that show photobiomodulation treatments [can potentially] improve neurocognition,” says Arany. RLT may not only reduce inflammation, but may also improve blood flow and oxygen to form new neurons and synapses in the brain, which may be helpful in people who have suffered traumatic brain injuries or strokes, according to an article published in the Journal of Neuroscience Research in April 2018.

Another promising perk? Ongoing studies on the use of red and near-infrared light to treat symptoms following a concussion may turn up benefits, according to Concussion Alliance.

5. May Improve Wound Healing

From skin to oral wounds, red light may be used to improve healing. In these cases, red light would be applied to the wound area until it's completely healed.

Furthermore, it may improve cell function, decrease inflammation and pain, spur tissue regeneration, and release growth factors, among other benefits, to speed healing.

6. May Lessen Side Effects of Cancer Treatment

One possible side effect of chemotherapy or radiation therapy is oral mucositis, which is pain, sores, infection, and bleeding inside the mouth, according to the MedlinePlus. It’s well-established that PBM may prevent or treat this specific side effect, according to a systematic review published in August 2022 in Frontiers in Oncology.

In addition, PBM has been used successfully on skin damage from radiation treatments and lymphedema after mastectomy — and the light therapy did not cause any additional side effects, notes a review published in June 2019 in Oral Oncology.

PBM itself is being looked at as a potential future cancer treatment, because it may stimulate the body’s immune response or enhance other anti-cancer therapies to help kill cancer cells. More research is needed.

Pre-Carbon Laser Peel

For the five days prior to your procedure avoid using on your face Retinoids, such as Retin-A, Vitamin C, Glycolic acids, and any type of strong cream that could interfere with your treatment. Avoid getting skin treatments at least two weeks prior to your session; these includes microdermabrasion and any type of professional or home exfoliation, Botox, Fillers, etc. Timing treatments is the clinic’s responsibility, as long as you do all your treatments at the same location, which is highly recommended.

Also, if you are taking antibiotics, make sure you have taken your last dose at least 7 days prior to your laser treatment.

Use Sun Protection

Wearing sun protection is extremely important whether you are seeking a Carbon Laser Peel treatment or not. You should always wear sun protection because it protects your skin from the harsh UVA and UVB rays of the sun. This includes wearing sunscreen, as well as a hat when going out in the sun.

Refrain from Smoking

Smokers need to be extra careful when considering laser treatments because it can affect their bodies’ ability to heal and achieve optimal results. Nicotine has been known to narrow the blood vessels in the skin, which prevents nutrients from reaching the outer layer of the skin.

Avoid Exfoliation

After a laser treatment, you should think of your skin as a fresh wound that needs to be treated with gentle care. You should avoid any products that contain strong fragrances and chemicals and stop your exfoliation for at least two weeks. You can use products with peptides, emollients, and SPF, and if you need to cleanse your skin, choose a milk cleanser or gentle moisturizing face wash.

Avoid Heavy Exercising

Your skin needs time to heal, and for your body to do that, it needs rest. Heavy exercising and sweating can irritate the delicate skin and slow down your ability to heal quickly. Take it easy—your skin will thank you for it!

How to Prepare For Your Laser Hair Removal Treatment

You ditched the painful waxing. What you want is permanent hair removal.

It may seem like a huge decision, however, you will not regret it. So how do you need to prepare then?

Laser hair removal is actually quite straightforward. As well as quick and painless. Of course, each laser session is different. It can take as little as ten minutes, or up to an hour, it all depends on the area you are having lasered.

Here's advice from our Certified Laser Technician:

1) Stay out of the sun or tanning beds

Sunlight and laser hair removal aren't really good friends. Yes, you can still enjoy the outdoors. What matters is that you reduce direct exposer to sunlight, especially during the weeks prior and after your laser session. You should also avoid tanning beds, lotions and airbrush tan. Why?

Reason number 1. Artificial tanning puts the skin into an excited state. This can interfere with the treatment. The laser is set by the technician to skin color and 'tanned' skin can alter the laser.

Reason number 2. Long exposure to direct sunlight without adequate protection can lead to sun damage. The skin is more vulnerable to the treatment.

Sun damage before or after a session can lead to pigmentation change amongst others. That is why we advice patients to start laser hair removal in the fall.

That way, they are done with their treatment before summer starts!

Sun protection is important all year long, so it's strongly suggested you apply a physical sunblock with a strong SPF. Especially if you treat your face, which is more often exposed to UV rays.

2) Shave before your appointment

You must shave before your treatment because unshaven hair will reduce the procedure's efficiency. It's recommended to shave the night before your appointment with a clean and sharp blade.

Why do you actually need to shave?

Because the laser does not target the hair itself. Its goal is to damage the hair follicle. The hair is just a conduit for the light energy to reach its destination.

However, if the hair is long, some energy may get lost along the way, resulting in the laser being able to do its job.

3) Do not wax, pluck, tweeze or sugar 2 weeks prior to your treatment!

A laser hair removal treatment needs one main thing to work. Unwanted body hair connected to the hair follicle. The problem with waxing and similar hair removal methods is that they remove the root along with the hair. Thus, there is no hair left to target. Shaving is different, it only cuts the hair at the surface of the skin. That conduit to the follicle is still there.

If you wax or tweeze before your laser hair removal session, you interfere with the efficiency of the treatment. Especially because growing a new hair will take up to six weeks.

Laser hair removal is a safe FDA approved hair removal option. However, it still bombards the skin with beams of light. After a laser session, the skin can be quite sensitive.

It is also more vulnerable to exterior elements. As a result, it is safer to avoid using makeup, chemicals or fragrances on the treated areas.

Your skin should also be free of lotions and creams.

4) Plan ahead for your session

Laser hair removal sessions can be very quick. Small areas may only take up to ten minutes. A larger area will need up to forty-five minutes. Many clients book a session over their lunch break.

Large areas or multi-area packages take longer. Thus, you may have to plan your session ahead. Only then can you find a slot that work for you.

5) Sun-Sensative Medications

Laser hair removal is a cosmetic procedure. It is a safe treatment, but some medications can cause issues with laser hair removal.

Look to see if any meds you are taking are not sun-sensative. Ask or chat with the Certified Laser Technician when making your first appointment about any questionable medications.

Hormonal treatments such as the contraceptive pill or hormone therapy may interfere with the treatment, or may take more treatments because hair growth is triggered by hormones.

15 Things You Need To Know Before Getting Laser Hair Removal

1. Laser hair removal does not actually work by using magic.

This treatment uses a cosmetic laser that has settings adjusted to your skin type. The laser fires a concentrated beam of light that's directed at the pigment in your hair follicles. This kills the follicle at its root, preventing those suckers from growing back.

2. Stay out of the sun before your appointment.

You can't receive this treatment if you're sunburned. Summer might not be the best time to start laser hair removal if you're a fan of the outdoors. A lot of people start treatments in the fall or winter in order to have stubble-free skin by summer!

3.You must shave the area you’re getting lasered.

Do NOT proceed to come in with your hairy self. This isn't like waxing, and you don't need to grow your unwanted hair out beforehand.

On that note, you can't come in for laser hair removal if you've had a wax or plucking recently. Remember: The laser targets the PIGMENT of your hair follicle, and the follicle actually has to be there in order for this to work.

* In fact, you'll need to shave a day before your appointment.

4. Stay away from tanning beds, spray tans, and tanning lotion 1-2 weeks before your laser treatment.

5. Make sure you have a Certified Laser Technician!

Let's be real, we are dealing with lasers! They have had the specific professional training.

The technician will provide a test patch on your skin at your first appointment.

The sad truth is that not everyone's skin will react well to cosmetic laser treatments. Pigment problems, discoloration, and scarring can occur with some skin types, which is why it's important to allow your technician to conduct a small test patch first.

6. Laser hair removal doesn’t automatically make you silky smooth after your first treatment.

I, too, was hoping that the process was a BAM one-and-done kinda deal, but alas it is not. It takes between five to six sessions of laser hair removal in order to see phenomenal results.

7. Your appointment can take anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour.

It all depends on the area you're having treated. Underarms and bikini lines tend to be quick treatments, but other areas like the legs or back can take a little longer.

8. If you want to see results, you have to be consistent.

Hear me out: There's a good reason for this. Your hair follicles are on their own growth cycle. People who see the best results typically go in for treatment every four weeks (28 days) in order to maximize the potential of zappin the most follicles. This time frame allows the dead hair shafts to fall out on their own.

9. You should see prominent results after three months.

I am the QUEEN of impatience, but trust me, you'll want to stick with it. After the first few treatments you might not see much of a difference, but I started to notice a dramatic drop in my unwanted follicles after the three-month mark — and even more after that.

10. Some hair and skin types can be a little harder to treat — but not impossible.

Dark hair follicles are usually easy to treat because, again, the laser targets the hair's pigment. This is also why gray, white, blonde, and red pigments can be tricky.

Darker tones can also be harder to treat, but not impossible.

11. DO NOT wax or pluck before or between your treatment.

Shaving is totally fine, but PUT DOWN THE TWEEZERS. Pulling out hair follicles after your laser hair removal treatment hinders the process. Your unwanted hair needs to fall out on its own in order to see the best results.

12. So, is laser hair removal actually SAFE?

Laser hair is a safe and effective treatment when performed by a Certified Laser Technician. It gives permanent hair reduction and is safe, fast, and effective.

13. And the most important question… is it ~worth it~?

A THOUSAND TIMES YES, in my humble opinion.

14. Medications:

Certain medications will prevent you from being able to have Laser Hair Removal, like sun sensitive meds. Look at your meds and ask your Certified Laser Technician.

15. Who CANNOT get Laser Hair Removal?

Women who are pregnant or breast feeding cannot have any laser treatments performed.

AFTERCARE:

1. Lather up that sunscreen post-treatment.

Listen, sunscreen should be your BFF in general, but definitely use it after your treatment. Your skin will be sensitive — even if it doesn't feel like it — and you need to protect it as much as possible.

2. Avoid gyms, saunas, swimming pools, hot tubs, deodorant, excessive exercise, and lotions for 24 after treatment
